fruit without stickers

Yesterday the girls and I braved a deluge of rain to go to the Roots Farmer's Market. The girls were in their raincoats and I was in a hooded sweatshirt...bad idea. But we ran through the rain and soaked our jeans up to our shins because I believe in the Farmer's Market.

When we first moved to Delaware and had one very close, I went because the produce was so much cheaper than at grocery stores. But since moving here something has crept up on me. A new feeling about the Farmer's Market that goes far beyond saving a dime on fresh fruit.

I love supporting these hard working farmers. They are proud of what they have done. They offer samples and readily speak about their crop. I love looking into the face of someone who nurtured this plant from a seed. I love that I know when I buy from Amish stands that no chemicals touched my family's produce.

After braving the rain so valiantly we rewarded ourselves and bought some snicker doodles from a very old and friendly Amish woman at a baked goods stand.

I have already decided that next week's trip will include reusable cloth bags and more snicker doodles. Yes, I love the market.

encyclopedia of me - C

Cafe Rio - If you have ever met someone who spent any length of time in Utah, they'll be willing and ready to gush about Cafe Rio. It's this amazing chain of restaurants filled with fresh, handmade tortillas, creamy tomatillo dressing and employees who frequently shout "FREE MEAL!" Hands down the food I crave the most since we moved from Utah is the Roast Beef Salad smothered in heavenly green dressing and crispy little strips of delightfulness.

Canada - Many people don't know that I have strong family ties to Canada and I am actually a dual citizen. My entire Paternal side is from Canada and so most of my family members have accents...so I picked up on a few words which I still pronounce in the Canadian accent. I spent a fair amount of time there as a youth and really love certain things about that country. The only sport I remember being watched in my home while growing up was NHL Hockey. And when the Olympics were in Vancouver...you bet your life I was cheering for the Canadians to beat the Americans in Hockey! Booyah!

Clorox Wipes - I am seriously addicted. I have always hated the stinky rag/yucky sponge situation in many kitchens. When Clorox wipes came along I threw away every icky cloth we owned for good. I love that I feel like I am not just cleaning, but disinfecting. I love the lemony fresh scent of the yellow container. I love the slightly rough side. I love it all. Yeah, I guess it may be wasteful to use them and toss them, but that's a waste I am more than happy to participate in.

The Cosby Show - My favorite show growing up. And if you lived through that era I am sure you will agree that it was so much more than just a show. It literally shaped the culture of my elementary/middle school. If you hadn't watched on Thursday night, then your Friday at school was a total bust. Lines were repeated, jokes were re-told and fashion was adored. And what little girl didn't want to be Denise Huxtable? I remember that one of my first crushes was on Theo. That rat-tail really did the trick. Sometimes I catch old episodes during the day and I always watch. It's still good...almost 30 years later.

Convergys - I met my amazing husband while working for the Summer at Convergys answering Customer Service calls for Sprint PCS (one reason why I will never have Sprint cell phone service). Convergys had a reputation for people meeting and getting married, so even now I feel silly admitting this fact. But the truth is...in the break room I first laid eyes on the love of my life. During my breaks I would hear girls giggling about how hot Matt Ahern was in the girls bathroom. I often raised my hand with a burning question when I didn't really have one....just so the dreamy floor supervisor wearing the Ben Kweller shirt would come over to my cubicle. And that will always make Convergys a special place in my memory.

Creme Brulee - Like pure sin in a bowl. When it is made correctly (which it sadly isn't in PA) it is sheer perfection. From the first crack of the spoon against the top crust to the hidden layer of silky smooth, vanilla-bean studded custard...I could swim in it. This dessert is the reason that upon our engagement the very first item Matt and I registered for was a handheld kitchen torch. Who needs a toaster when there is creme brulle to be consumed?

this past week

Monday

Had a long and full day. But I was not too very tired at the end to
meet my newest Nephew, Oliver, via Skype.

Tuesday

Today I dropped the girls off at PreSchool and headed to the Social Security Bldg. here to get a new SS card, which has mysteriously disappeared during our move from Delaware. I also hit up the DMV and grocery store. After school the girls donned their new raincoats and played in the downpour.

Wednesday

All day, in the car, running errands. I stopped the car to gaze
at the scenery of the Spring crops being gathered in.

Thursday

We registered Ella for Kindergarten today. Her school looks very nice
and the staff were wonderful. Here she is taking her Dibels test.

Later that evening our church had a birthday party for our women's
organization. I helped plan it and it went very well.

Friday

Another busy day spent mostly in the car. Our CD player recently broke in our van,
so we headed to GoodWill and picked up these early 90's gems to jam to.

ROCK STAR Birthday Party

Alright! Here is the rundown of last weekend's joint Birthday Rock Star Party!

First, I should mention that we are not those people who invite everyone in our child's class. We allowed them to invite as many friends as the age they are turning. So, since this was combined and Ella is 5 and Evangeline is 3...we had 8 guests, including our children. I have always liked this method better than inviting a house filled with 30 kids and therefore...inviting chaos.

The Invites
We made these half on the computer and half from paper. I designed the information and we printed it onto white cardstock. Then we Put it onto black cardstock, used dimensional foam dots to apply sparkly stars and other symbols and used Stickles to make the words ROCK STAR glittery.

The Set-Up
Our joint birthday presents for the girls was a stage for our play room. I thought up the basic plans and idea and Matt executed it perfectly. We used MDF and 2x6" underneath for support and height. We painted it black (and soon a large white star will be painted in the center). It fits into the corner of our room.

Then I purchased two rectangular plastic tablecloths at WalMart ($2/each) and hung them from the ceiling behind the stage. I also purchased large foil stars in red and gold and smaller foil stars in silver (also from the Party section of WalMart). I used fishing line and white thumbtacks to hang the stars above the stage.

We also purchased a package containing 8 pairs of Rock Star sunglasses in the WalMart party section for $2.00

The Backstage Passes
I designed these Backstage Passes for each guest, personalized with their name. Here is the front and the back.

When Guests arrived I met them at the door, wearing my backstage pass which said "TOUR MANAGER". I asked for each guest's name and checked my list to make sure they were VIP members. Then I gave each their backstage pass and let them choose a pair of the Rock Star sunglasses.

The Craft
Once all of the guests arrived we sat down at our table and each guest got a microphone to personalize. I started with a toilet paper roll. I stuffed it with crumpled aluminum foil for stability. Then used black duct tape to tape across the bottom hole and then wound the black duct tape up the rest of the roll, going over the top edge. I folded the tape over the top edge. Then I made foil balls and hot-glued them to the top of each taped roll.

At the table I had an assortment of adhesive backed foam stars, shapes and letters. Each child wrote their name and then embellished their mic with stars and other foam shapes. Here's Evangeline holding her microphone.

The Activity
We headed downstairs to the Concert. We had the stage set up and had put out at least one instrument for each child if they wanted it. We had a tambourine, maracas, drums and small toy pianos. All of these things we already owned. I had made a mix CD of kid-friendly dance songs and we put the music on and let them dance, play and sing their hearts out. They LOVED it!

The Cake
I made a guitar shaped cake and decorated it as a hot pink electric guitar. I used a Wilton pan, but there is a template to cut a guitar from cake on the Family Fun website here.

The Favors
I'm not a big fan of the small gift bag of favors, so each child got to take home their microphone, backstage pass and rock star glasses as their favors. They seemed more than excited with those items. Here Jackson displays his sweet glasses, backstage pass and stellar drum moves.

It was a fantastic party. The kids were happy as clams and there wasn't too much work to do during the actual party time. Just some prep and then we let them go wild. It was our most successful party yet.

Who Do You Think You Are?

No, this is not an insult.
It's a television show.
And not just any TV show...
It's the TV show that makes me cry every single week.

Lisa Kudrow produces this amazing show which profiles a different celebrity each week and takes them on a journey to find their ancestry. They start with a close relative, usually their parents, get some information and then team up with Ancestry.com to take a journey across the country (and sometimes across the world) to find their past.

This show is completely captivating! It airs on Friday nights on NBC in the first primetime hour.

But, if you have missed the past three weeks and you have Comcast (with On Demand) you can cath up easily. Go to On Demand > Television Entertainment > NBC > Who Do You Think You Are and click on the episode you want to watch. The pilot episode with Sarah Jessica Parker is a good place to start since it is truly astonishing what she finds out.

This makes me think of my own ancestors, which I have been researching for the past 2 or 3 years. I started working on their lines while still in Utah and was led to Herkimer County, NY where the Folts family lived. I documented my journey here and included a follow-up here. I ended up finding an entire branch of family whom had been lost. I felt such kinship to the Foltses and now, since we have moved here, I am only a six hour drive from there. I plan on setting aside a weekend and traveling there to try and collect artifacts from their lives...headstones, certificates and maybe photos from the Historical Society.

If you want to learn more about your family I encourage you to visit a Family History Center. These centers are located all over the world, cost nothing and are staffed with experts who can help you out. They are run by the LDS Church, but you do not need to be a church member to go, in fact, over 50% of the users of these facilities are not members of the LDS church. Ancestry.com is also a great resource, but costs $$$ to subscribe. However, if you want to save money you can visit a Family History Center and they have free access to Ancestry.com.

Find a Family History Center near you by clicking here.

Have you seen this show yet?

Recipes That Rock: Turtle Pie

As promised, here is the recipe that Amber made for our National Pi Day celebration. It turns out this was a winner of a national contest hosted by Nestle and BH&G. And it's no wonder it won...seriously, people...it's like pure sin in a pre-baked shell.

*Recipe and photo from VERY BEST BAKING

Turtle Pie

1 prebaked 9-inch pie shell
2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) Semi-Sweet Chocolate CHIPS, divided
1 tablespoon butter
20 vanilla caramels
1 1/3 cups heavy whipping cream, divided
1 1/2 cups lightly salted peanuts, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup milk
15 large marshmallows
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping (recipe below)

FOR CHOCOLATE LAYER:
HEAT 1/3 cup morsels and butter in small saucepan over low heat stirring frequently, until morsels are melted. Spread melted chocolate on bottom and up sides of prebaked pie shell. Refrigerate for 15 minutes or until set.

FOR CARAMEL LAYER:
HEAT caramels and 1/3 cup whipping cream in small saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently, until caramels are melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in nuts. Spoon over chocolate layer; cover. Refrigerate.

FOR MARSHMALLOW LAYER:
HEAT 1 1/3 cups morsels, milk and marshmallows in medium saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate and marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract. Cool completely.

BEAT remaining whipping cream until soft peaks form; fold into cooled marshmallow mixture. Carefully spoon over caramel layer (pie will be full). Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight.

FOR TOPPING:
HEAT 3 caramels, 2 tablespoons whipping cream and 1 tablespoon butter in small saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently, until smooth; cool slightly. Top each serving with topping, whipped cream and remaining morsels.

Pie Day FUN!!

All in all we had 20 people (8 adults and 12 kids) over tonight. Eating pie, playing hide n' seek, hooting and hollering at football games, talking about good local Doctors and much much more.

And, as is the case with most parties, it's not really about the pie.
It's so much more about the friends.

But, I mean, c'mon....let's not forget the pies either.

Does anyone else kind of love the chaos and noise that comes from a large gathering of people with small kids and good food? I love it. It makes me feel all at home and warm.

Everyone's pies were delightful (ours were still overly warm and kind of smooshy, but still good), but I think no one attending would take offense if I stated that the super-stah of the night was the Turtle Pie made by Amber. She has promised to share the recipe and then I will share with you.

I think it's clear that America needs more National holidays
based on dessert categories.

Am I right?

Recipes That Rock: Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie

Since today is March 14 (aka 3.14) it is National Pi Day and National Pie Day.
We are having a sweet pie party this evening with two families we love and plenty of pie.

One pie that I am famous for (but cannot take credit for since it's my Mom's recipe) is our Chocolate Peanut Butter pie. Mmmmm...chocolate. So I though I would share it with you in honor of this fine day.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER PIE

2&1/2 c. whole milk
1 pt. whipping cream
2 pkg. chocolate instant pudding
1/4 c. powdered sugar
4 T. peanut butter
9” cooked pie shell cooked or graham cracker crust

1. With a whisk or electric mixer beat milk, ½ c. whipping cream and pudding.
2. Make pb crumbs by combining powdered sugar and peanut butter until crumbles form. Spread 1/3 of crumb mixture into bottom of pie shell.
3. Pour mixed filling over crumbs to fill crust.
4. Add another third of the crumbs on top of pudding mixture.
5. Whip remaining cream with 2 Tbs. sugar until firm. Top pie with whipped cream.
6. Sprinkle remaining crumbs on top of whipped cream layer and refrigerate for 2 hours until pudding is set.

Sorry I have no photo.
I promise I'll upload one sometime in the future.

It's Potty Time...Excellent...Woo-Woo-Woo!

Evangeline's instances of visiting the little princess potty have increased. Up to this point we have kept her in diapers and made the potty available in our most highly trafficked area. Occasionally, she would decide to use it. Then last night we had a great talk before she went to bed.

A talk about Big Girls and panties and the potty. I asked her if she would like to only wear panties from now on and she said yes. So, this morning, bright and early I took off her diaper and put on some hot pink panties.

Side Note: This always a kind of funny step for me, since you have never seen your little person and their cute little tushie in panties before and it's really cute.

Well, this morning has been a success so far. Around 9:00 AM she began to pee-pee on the floor, realized her mistake and ran to the little potty, pulled down her panties and finished the pee-pee she had started. Yes, this is progress.

Ella potty trained so easily, that sometimes other Mommies ask me for tips. Let me say this...I don't really know what I am doing. I pretty much lucked out. There are only a few things that remain constant in our Potty Training routine.

1. We let each child decorate their own potty. When it was time for Ella we bought a really inexpensive potty and then bought some Dollar Store window clings. We made a big production about her decorating her potty with her Disney Princess window clings and it seemed very effective in making her feel ownership. The colorful array of potty seats pictured above are a whopping $3.99 at Ikea and can easily be decorated. We plan on getting one for each floor of the house during Eva's training.

2. We never do Pull-Ups. Besides being expensive, I have heard from many Mommies that kids are way too smart for these. They know it's a glorified diaper and that they can fill it like they would a diaper. When we feel our kids are truly ready, we ditch the diapers, put on panties and never look back.

3. We always sing the Potty song. And do other things like it. The first time the child uses the potty on their own we call everyone we know, hoot, holler, eat treats and sing the official Ahern Potty Song (which I made up when Ella was training and which sounds like a Football Team fight song).

That's all I've got. I always feel freaked out, un-prepared and down right afraid when we start this process. But when it works, like today, I am giddy...truly and pathetically giddy.

Here's to Princess panties,
bathroom step stools
and no more poopy diapers.

A few other thoughts on the Oscars

Did you think I could stop at just one post?
It's my SuperBowl, baby!

The Hosts
......ZZZZZZZzzzZZZZZzzzzzzz........
One line, old-man zingers do not a good Oscars show make.
Why can't Jon Stewart come back?

The Orchestra Music
Worst ever.
Really odd song choices played in elevator style = yuck.
Particularly bad after Catherine Bigelow one for Best Director.
Following her speech was a dreadful rendition of I Am Woman, Hear me Roar.

The Performance of Oscar Nominated Songs
Awful. Nobody likes Interpretive Dance. Nobody.

The Memoriam Montage
Best ever. I really liked the live music by James Taylor
(even though I have never been a JT fan).
It was touching and personal.

The Intro of Best Actor/Actress Categories
Also good. I really liked the personal touch of former
colleagues talking about each nominee.

The Set
Seemed especially cool this year.
I liked the old Hollywood feeling, but it also seemed modern.
Only, once in a while random backdrops would appear that made no sense to me.
Did anyone else notice that?
