Best Gift for Children

My In-Laws gave the girls what I consider the best Chirstmas/Bithday gifts a child can be given...wait, is this the part where I say love? No, I mean an actual gift. Pay attention Grandparents out there (do any Grandparents read this blog?) because here is my fave gift ever.

A year long membership to our local children's museum.

In amongst a heavy ration of new toys, new books and new trinkets that get spread around the house, loved for a season and later forgotten...a membership to a children's museum builds memories, knowledge, fun and lasts an entire year.

Matt's parents gave the girls a year admission to the Hands On House here in Lancaster, PA but they also upgraded from the Family Membership to the Contributing Membership. And that means free admission for our entire family to 100 other participating museums across the US and Canada during the 2010 year.

And here's my suggestion to parents of children who receive this sort of gift. Mark specific times and dates on your yearly calendar when you will be visiting these museums. The Hands on House is about 20 minutes from our home, so I have scheduled visit there twice each month. But the even more amazing Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia is one of the additional 100 museums included as part of our Contributing membership. Since it is about 1 hour away from our house, I have scheduled on our calendar 3 visits during the coming year and another 3 visits to the Port Discovery Children's Museum in Baltimore, which is also just 1 hour away.

Having it marked on your calendar means you and your kids will get the very most out of this priceless gift during the coming year!

I'm with you on that one. My in-laws did that last year as well and we went to the Discovery Gateway a million times this past year. Sadly we didn't renew this year, I'm really going to miss it.

That is a fantastic idea! I wish we lived closer to venues like that - I would love to take my boys as often as possible. I'm sure your family will enjoy it.

THat is great! We did a contributing membership on that network for a few years and loved it. The Hands on House is so fun. And the new Please Touch museum is awesome. And, there's a new Delaware Children's museum that's opening in April...so mark your calendar for that one too, and I'll meet you there.

The Please Touch Museum is the greatest…And on an unrelated note, I made your corn casserole this week. I printed out the recipe when I first started reading your blog (over a year ago now) yet never got around to making it until now….It was a huge success- thanks for making me look like I have some semblance of domestic talent.

love the hands-on house! we haven't ventured to the new please touch museum yet. i completely agree that this is the gift that keeps on giving! and i LOVE your idea to put dates on the calendar! last year, my sister-in-law gave us a season pass to the philadelphia zoo and i'm ashamed to say we only went once....maybe if we had actually planned it on our calendar, we would have taken better advantage of such a great gift :)
