Best Movie Musicals
The Sound of Music - I mean, c'mon....it's just the best ever. One of my lifelong dreams is to attend the official Sound of Music sing-along in California before I die.

The Fiddler on the Roof - So profound and beautiful and meaningful. I love love love it!

West Side Story - I grew up watching this movie and wishing I could be Anita, Maria's sassy and sultry Puerto Rican aunt. I am guessing most little girls would want to be the lead...Maria. But Anita is so cool.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - A family classic. One of my favorites. And the best part is being young and fighting over who gets to "be" Dorkus. Because, despite having a crappy name, she was the prettiest and got to hook up with the hunkiest brother, Benjamin.

Meet Me in St Louis - The music, the story, the teenage infatuation with John Truitt....what's not to love? I adore the old cool house they live in and that the movie is separated by season.

What's YOUR favorite movie musical?

I have not seen West Side Story or Meet Me in St Louis. But the others... LOVE. My top 5 in no particular order would be:
Oklahoma
State Fair
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Fiddler on the Roof
The King and I
meet me in st. louis is my all-time favorite movie. i love it with all my heart. i really wanted my ringtone to be "under the bamboo tree"...
Now here is a topic that I have to comment on because I am the biggest musical junkie ever. So glad you didn't diss Sound of Music. It absolutely is the best of all time, and your dream is California Sing Along, mine is to take the tour in Salzburg before I die. I love the rest on the list. I love all things Julie Andrews so I would add Mary Poppins to the list, as well as The King and I, My Fair Lady, and don't forget one of the best of all time--Singing in the Rain! (and you are totally right about Dorkus and Benjamin!)
Oooh, this is a hard one. I HAVE seen Sound of Music and 7 Brides for Brothers, so we can still be friends. But I LOVE the Sound of Music. It might be my favorite. I mean, the 16 going on 17 and dancing in the rain? So awesome. I used to act it out and jump from couch to chair to fireplace trying to be Liesl. I don't know if it's my favorite, but I really love it.
OH! And My Fair Lady. That's a good one.
My all time favorite is 'The Sound of Music' and then it's 'Fiddler on the Roof'. I haven't seen any of the others but I plan to rent 'West Side Story' this weekend!!
I thought Anita was Maria's sister in law or something. weird. But of course you wanted to be Dorkus! It's Julie Newmar! She's so statuesque. I actually haven't seen the last one.
My top five:
sound of music
happiest millionaire
my fair lady
seven brides for seven brothers
state fair
I might as well just blog about it too while the kiddos are eating their lunch!
I grew up watching musical's, too. My mother is a huge fan of them, and passed the love onto all her girls. I have seen every single one of them at least 5 times. My Dad loves them, too. His fave is Fiddler on the Roof, and sings "if I were a rich man" ALL THE TIME! Sound of Music I own and have watched it a gazillion times. My 3 boys love it too. :) I would add to your list My Fair Lady, Music Man, The King and I, Hello Dolly!, and Mary Poppins.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

White Christmas
The Happiest Millionaire I LOVE IT!!
Mary Poppins
My Fair Lady
Grease
Calamity Jane
On The Town
Singin in the Rain
Kiss me Kate
Summer Magic
Oh it just goes on and on...
Oooh, I've never seen "meet me in st. louis". i'll have to add that to my netflix list. Thanks!
thank you ashley...
i love all those you mentioned emilie, but i was starting to get scared when i got through 9 comments and no one had mentioned grease or newsies!
i'm a musical junkie.
one of my ALL TIME FAVE'S that no one has mentioned is "thoroughly modern millie". it is definitely on my top five list. what do you expect with julie andrews, mary tyler moore, and carol channing. totally and completely enchanting.
emilie...you would LOVE this one.
I'm a total 'Singing In The Rain' fan, first and foremost. It's something about a young Gene Kelly in those tight black pants during the dream sequence *sigh*
I also agree with 'Meet Me In St. Louis', and it has my favourite Christmas Song - 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' sung by Judy Garland. My Mom was a total musical junkie, so I come by it naturally. Also, recently, I'm a big fan of 'Hairspray'. The oldies are still the goodies, but some of the new ones keep right up.
Can't leave "South Pacific" off the list! Who canresist singing along with "Happy Talk" and "Wash That Man Outta My Hair"?
Does the Three Amigos count?
I love all the movies you've mentioned but I have to say Calamity Jane is my fav! Dois Day just rocks and "Secret Love" is just a wonderful song!
You seriously nailed this list. The only thing I think I would switch out is the last one (which I guess I shouldn't judge before I see it-hehe) with The King and I!! Nothing beats the great old musicals!!
the sound of music, annie, grease & rent (well the stage more than the movie)...a little from a few decades (i think...:)
LOVE the sound of music. when my hubby and i were in stowe, vermont, we saw the von trapp family estate and although it wasn't the swiss alps, i still felt like running through the fields and singing 'the hills are alive....' :)
I think I watched all or most of these with you from your ass-kicking laser disc selection growing up! Love, love, love musicals! But I also love the newer movies like Hairspray, Chicago, and potentially my favorite Bride and Prejudice! Take Jane Austen add some Bollywood and you have pure musical magic. But I'll be honest, I love all the movies mentioned so far. It's never a bad idea to break out in song, especially on camera!
I love Oklahoma, West Side Story, Fiddler. I also love Seven Brides. Jon played Frankincense in college. I have a great picture of him doing a pike that ran in the local paper. I guess because of that it's my favorite.
Love musicals!!
My top 5:
The Sound of Music (I was named after Maria)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Oklahoma
My Fair Lady
The Fiddler on the Roof
If I have to choose favorites, these are the ones I always feel compelled to watch if they are on tv. There are so many that I love!
