one of my heroes is...

Annie Leibovitz.

In my opinion, she is the best portrait photographer of all time.

I have lately been studying her work in order to try and grow as a photographer.

Annie somehow manages to capture a dimension that is undiscovered in the faces of her subjects. And when she has free reign to create a scene for photos she creates incredible stories with one shot. I cannot even describe it, or put into words how amazing I think she is, but here are some of her photos that are pure magic.

I also highly recommend seeing the documentary "Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens". It is a very well made and an absolute MUST SEE for photographers, both amateur and professional. The dvd is available to rent through Netflix and if you rent it be sure to watch the EXTRAS as well, which has as much good information, fresh perspective and inspiration as the documentary itself.

Are you familiar with Annie Leibovitz's work?

I love the crazy huge sets they build for some of her shoots. A while ago we happened to catch a documentary about her work and life I think it was on PBS. Anyhow she is a pretty interesting person. You should check it out. I cant remember the name but I know with your craftiness you will find it in a cinch!

I love the recreations of Disney fairytales that she did for Disneyland's anniversary a few years back. AWESOME stuff.

Yes! I do think that she's brilliant. I do wonder, however, if my own fascination with her work is largely because her subjects are mostly well known personalities or celebrities. I mean, would I be as as intrigued by a naked John and Yoko if it weren't John and Yoko? But maybe that's her genius.....getting those celebs to do the unexpected. Did you see her portrait of the Queen of England? Wow.
