The Wisdom of 17 Magazine

May I talk about a topic close to my heart? Beauty. You women are beautiful! Don't you know it? Yes...I mean you, reading this right now. Not some other woman...YOU. This is not meaningless drivel, I truly and sincerely believe it.

My heart breaks when we tear ourselves down, compare ourselves to others and find fault, look in the mirror and think that we deserve less because of some undefinable quality we believe we lack.

And so I just want to say this. As you make New Year's resolutions to get more fit, eat less and improve your health don't forget that while you are striving to be better (as I am as well) don't forget that right now, today, you are beautiful....just as you are. Remember, Marilyn Monroe was a size 16 at one point in her career.

In a uncharacteristic moment of wisdom, Seventeen magazine has put out the following Body Peace Treaty for women everywhere to print and sign. Almost 50,00 females have signed it so far. Can you imagine the sheer force for good those females will become?!! I think every woman should commit to this too. It's brilliant. Here it is.

I VOW TO...
- Remember that the sun will still rise tomorrow even if I had one too many slices of pizza or an extra scoop of ice cream tonight.
- Never blame my body for the bad day I'm having.
- Stop joining in when my friends compare and trash their own bodies.
- Never allow a dirty look from someone else to influence how I feel about my appearance.
- Quit judging a person solely by how his or her body looks — even if it seems harmless — because I'd never want anyone to do that to me.
- Notice all the amazing things my body is doing for me every moment I walk, talk, think, breathe...
- Quiet that negative little voice in my head when it starts to say mean things about my body that I'd never tolerate anyone else saying about me.
- Remind myself that what you see isn't always what you get on TV and in ads — it takes a lot of airbrushing, dieting, money, and work to look like that.
- Remember that even the girl who I'd swap bodies with in a minute has something about her looks that she hates.
- Respect my body by feeding it well, working up a sweat when it needs it, and knowing when to give it a break.
- Realize that the mirror can reflect only what's on the surface of me, not who I am inside.
- Know that I'm already beautiful just the way I am.

AMEN!!! This is powerful and amazing.

Print it out and live by it and not only will your happiness grow, but I am convinced that the beauty you see in others and in the world around you will also increase.

Hi Emilie
My friend served in Al Asad too as one of the leaders that trained their Iragi police there. Your father in law is obviously an awesome man and needed by so many to benefit from his professional/spiritualism.

I just want to say that I think YOU are a beautiful person, you give so much to uplift and encourage your readers and friends and that is such a lovely quality. I'm having my own challenges in life right now but your blog has been a source of relief for me, just reading about your gorgeous girls, or something that inspires you helps me to quit wallowing in self pity!

You are awesome Emilie, really awesome.
