One of the most frequent questions I get asked is tips for getting your scrapbooking projects published. Here are my most valuable pieces of advice.Submit Submit Submit - Get to know the calls that are out there and submit to everything you think would fit. When I first started I went to the pubcalls blog every day and checked on every call and update there was. I submitted to anything and everything I could.
Use Current Products - No, it's not a must but it really helps your chances. You have to remember that these magazines are running a business with advertisers and trying to keep their magazine fresh and current. You greatly improve your chances by using products released at the previous CHA.
Create A System - It only took me a month or so of submitting to realize that I was completely disorganized. I began to keep a small notebook with me as I created Layouts. On each page I wrote the title of the layout and documented each product I used (and fonts) as I created. Then, if it fit a call in future I wrote the call I submitted it to on the bottom of the same page. When it got picked up I highlighted the title so I didn't submit it again.
Read the Directions - Make sure you carefully read and adhere to the guidelines for each submission. Some mags will delete your submission if there is anything off.
Think "Different" - I suck at cards. I really do and it's okay, but I recently saw a call for holiday cards for Paper Crafts and I thought to myself, "I bet they get thousands of Christmas cards, but how many Hanukkah cards do they get?" I am not Jewish, but I made a Hanukkah card and it got picked up. We've all seen a million baby pages. Try pages about teens, grandparents, objects, use heritage photos...anything beyond the normal subject matter.
Title, Journal, Multi-Photo - When I started to try to get published, I took my favorite mag and tried to see what every single pubbed layout had in common. Know what it was? A clear and easily distinguished title. I started titling every single layout I did and my pubs started rolling in. Also, multi-photo layouts are back with a vengeance. And so is visible journaling. Combine the three and you've got a great shot!
DON'T GET DISCOURAGED - Seriously girls. I have sat in a meeting with major mags and seen them love a layout, but pass it up for that issue because it would clash with the colors of the advertisement that was already slotted for the opposite page. Don't get discouraged. Keep trying!

Hey first off thanks for stopping by my blog ..and second .. thanks for posting this .. because I was so venting about seeing the same faces all the time in ALL the magazines with so much talent out there..so this is helpful for those of us that are not known and would like to share our journaling or our cute pic as well hee hee ..
Thanks Em.
Thanks for sharing this Emily. I don't think I have seen so many tips about getting published - I think its something we all dream about (at its something I do). Love seeing your LOs in the mags.
I was looking for your blog last night because I wanted to thank you for the tip on the Heidi Swapp chipboard. I just made a yummy layout with the lime green ones...a nice long title that fit in a little itty bitty spot. I was reading the comments on Lizzy K's blog and saw your link. So anyway, (by the way I totally am not a stalker, lol) thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
And the tips....just what I needed to hear right about now.
"I will be patient....I will be patient...I will (you get the idea)" Anyway it was nice to meet you in person and not just see your face on my bathroom floor, lol. Take care and thanks again!
wow, emilie. thank you so much for the advice. am one who's been published, but it's as if my luck ran out :( it can be very disheartening when you don't know what you are doing wrong and what you are doing right! tank you so muhc. not everyone would share this!
great tips! this is encouraging! :)
Great tips! You have listed several ideas I've never read before. Super helpful! Thank you!
thanks for sharing these tips...just recently started submitting and was lucky enough to get a couple picked up....
Those are great tips. That last one is also interesting...but totally makes sense. The mag editors ARE scrapbookers, therefore obsessive about color schemes, appearance, etc.
thanks so much for your very helpful tips Emily-I love your blog and check in often. I hope to start doing some submitting after all the craziness of summer simmers down.
Thanks again!!!!
Great tips!! Oh and by the way, why in the world does my reader not want your blog to be put into it......sniff :(
Thank you for the great tips! If you would be willing, I would love a tip or two for pubbing digi layouts...is there still a connection to CHA? Sizes they prefer? I will admit to having only tried a few times but I would love to get a piece in. P.S. I have wondered about sneaking a Rebel onto my credit card too...just today! :)
Thanks for posting the tips. I'm going down this path. No luck yet.
